This Monday Christmas thing has really thrown me. This might be an unflattering view into the other parts of my professional life, but a Monday deadline always feels like an invitation to procrastinate — after all, I have the entire weekend to get that project done. I have been doing the same about Christmas (Monday, 12/25/24). Have you?
And now here we are. Online retailers have pop-ups that say “sorry, pal, you’re too late,” and chain or mall retail feels like that grocery store scene from World War Z. (I was in Target yesterday and can speak to this first-hand. I still haven’t recovered.)
That’s where local shops like ours — We’re Avenues Dry Goods, on Irving between 42nd and 43rd Avenues in San Francisco, if you’re wondering who the heck this is —can help. We’re here for you and open with expanded hours through Christmas Eve. We’re opening our doors at 10:30 AM, and are sticking around until 5:30 PM on Friday and Saturday; on Sunday (aka Christmas Eve) we’ll be open by 10 and will remain open until the streets clear out, which is typically around 3 or so.
As always, thanks so much for supporting our small business. After seven years in operation, we know that December is our make or break month. By coming by this weekend, you’ll help us keep that momentum going.
Happy holidays,
Tim and Eve
PS If it’s an odd hour, you can always call to make sure we’re open! Our number is 415-841-2870, and we have a land line that actually rings, often confusing young children nonplussed by a telephone that is attached to the wall.
PPS Yes, we know that Substack, the platform we’ve used for these occasional missives, is a problem. The next time you hear from us, it will be via a different email service, we promise.
